Using a bathroom sealant is an excellent way to prevent leaks and damage. By applying it between your bath or shower and your bathroom panels, you can stop water from getting into any small gaps.
However, bathroom sealant does need to be renewed every few years as it can become discoloured or mouldy. So, if you do need to replace your bathroom sealant, here are a few handy tips.
Tip 1: Remove the existing sealant first!
There are several ways to do this, with perhaps the simplest being to use a specialist sealant removal gel.
Tip 2: Prepare
Gather all the tools and materials needed so that they are easily accessible.
Tip 3: Practise (if it is your first go)
If this is your first attempt at using a sealant gun, use a small piece of cardboard and practice the trigger action so that you know how hard to press to get the desired amount of sealant to come out.
Tip 4: Use masking tape
Using masking tape on either side of the join (with a small gap for the sealant), helps in terms of keeping edges straight and even. It also reduces mess.
Bathroom sealant specialists
There are a number of companies with expertise in bathroom sealant and other similar products. Several of these also have useful online resources, such as the example seen here: ct1.com/product-applications/sealing-bath-guide-beginners.
Tip 5: Use an applicator tool
This allows you to smooth the sealant as you apply it. This pushes it into gaps. It also helps remove any excess sealant. You should alternate between applying and smoothing.
Tip 6: Work in small sections
This prevents the sealant from drying before you get a chance to smooth it.
Tip 7: Shower or bath?
If you have a shower enclosure, make sure to seal the outside only. This prevents unpleasant smells and stagnant water.
If sealing the bathtub, fill it with water beforehand so that the weight and pressure are the same as when it is being used. This should enable a tighter and more durable seal.
