Pom poms are often one of the very first crafting projects we make as novice knitters, crocheters or macrame fans. They are a great way to finish off a project or to provide a decorative accessory in the home or in your wardrobe. We most often think of pom poms to finish a hat, but they can also be used to edge blankets, create wreaths and for all other kinds of craft.
But what is the easiest way to make a pom pom? Well, firstly, you’ll find that everyone has their own preferred methods and there’s no ‘best’ way. It’s worth going through a little trial and error until you find your own preference. Here are some approaches to try, however. Gather up your DK Yarn from Wool Couture and prepare to embellish!
1. Cardboard discs
Many of us remember making pom poms from circular cardboard cut-outs. You simply make two identical cardboard circles from an old cereal box or delivery box, then cut a smaller circle inside each to make two discs.
Wind the yarn around the two disks together, and then thread a final length of yarn through the wound wool to catch it all. Cut the wool around the outer edges of the disc and tighten the inner capturing thread that brings all the strands together into the familiar pom pom shape. You can then cut the yarn to tidy up the pom pom
- Use a fork
For smaller pom poms you can wind your yarn around the tines of a fork and then follow the same procedure described above. These are great for making mini pom poms and very quick.
3. Buy a pom pom maker
You can also buy plastic pom pom makers that make this fun activity completely foolproof! These are great for kids and wobbly hands, and you’ll find yourself making balls of pom poms with ease during your favourite show. You can pick these up easily in most craft stores and you’ll sometimes find them offered as freebies with craft magazines too.
